תהלים, פרק מ״ה, פסוק ז׳

Psalms 45:7Sefaria

A royal promise bridges the gap between mortal leadership and Divine authority, establishing that the stability and permanence of a kingdom depend entirely on honesty and true justice.

The connection between the earthly ruler and the Divine is understood in a few distinct ways. The primary approach among commentators [אבן עזרא, המאירי, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ] is that the king's throne is conceptually viewed as the throne of God. Occupying such a seat represents a position of immense honor, but more importantly, it shows that the king judges with the same truth and fairness as God's own leadership. Because of this alignment with Divine justice, his rule remains protected from the changes of time. A different perspective [רש״י] views the divine title in this context as a reference to a human prince or judge, addressing the king directly by his role as an administrator of justice. Alternatively, others [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, אבן עזרא בשם רב סעדיה גאון] explain that God Himself is the one who actively prepares, grants, and sustains the royal throne. This divine backing ensures that the kingdom will endure firmly for as long as the world exists [המאירי].

The underlying reason for this eternal kingship lies in the nature of the ruler's authority. The royal scepter serves both as a symbol of power and as a rod of discipline held by the leader [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. There is broad agreement that the throne will last forever specifically because the king guides his people with absolute honesty, truth, and justice, while rejecting wickedness. Taking this a step further, a poetic interpretation [מלבי״ם] imagines this uprightness as a living entity holding the scepter. The king's rule is so deeply tied to justice that honesty itself becomes the active force steering the entire kingdom.
