Psalms 49:2Sefaria

The opening call reaches out to all of humanity, as its message is essential for every living creature into whom God has breathed life [אבן עזרא]. It speaks to the core of human nature and the universal tendency to place trust in material wealth, making this moral lesson necessary for everyone without exception

The plea is divided into two distinct forms of listening and addresses two different groups. One approach sees this as a division between the collective and the individual. A strong call is directed at entire nations and societies, which form the primary focus. A gentler request to incline the ear [מצודת ציון] is directed at private individuals. This dual warning is necessary because the moral corruption that comes from chasing wealth plagues both national societies and individual people [מלבי״ם].

Another perspective connects the type of listening to a person's immersion in the material world. A general call is shouted from afar to those who are not entirely consumed by worldly matters. In contrast, the request to incline the ear requires drawing close. It is aimed specifically at those who treat the physical world as their permanent home and main priority, forgetting that they are merely temporary residents [אלשיך].

The target of this message includes all mortals living in the present, fleeting reality The physical world itself is described using a concept that suggests aging and wearing out, much like rust. Alternatively, drawing from ancient tradition, the description is linked to the weasel. According to this tradition, every animal on land has a counterpart in the sea, except for the weasel. Therefore, this serves as a poetic way of addressing all land dwellers across the globe
