Psalms 51:4Sefaria

King David turns to God with a plea for deep spiritual renewal, comparing a soul stained by wrongdoing to a soiled garment in need of a thorough cleaning. He does not merely ask for forgiveness but seeks an active, intense process of scouring and purification. Wrongdoing clings to the soul and defiles it, much like a stubborn stain grips a piece of clothing A simple, superficial rinse is not enough. Instead, true spiritual cleansing requires a vigorous and intensive scrubbing to draw out the dirt that has penetrated deep within [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The primary approach among commentators is that this plea asks for an overwhelming amount of cleansing There are different ways to understand this intense request. Some view it as a direct appeal for God to multiply His mercy while washing the sinner Others understand it as a description of the cleaning itself, asking for a massive, powerful, and thorough wash

The appeal for cleansing is split into two distinct parts, highlighting a core difference between types of wrongdoing and how they are repaired. The first part deals with severe wrongdoing, which acts as a heavy stain that is incredibly difficult to remove. In this case, the plea for a powerful washing is actually a request for God to spread out the necessary punishment. By breaking the penalty into many minor, manageable hardships over time, it acts like a series of small, gentle washings. This prevents a single, unbearable blow that could lead to death and the desecration of God's name. On the other hand, the second part of the plea addresses lighter misdeeds. For these lesser wrongs, the request is for a rapid, absolute, and complete purification all at once [אלשיך].
