Psalms 71:14Sefaria

A person facing life's hardships can either fall into despair or hold onto an unshakeable trust in God. The psalmist chooses absolute trust, waiting and hoping for salvation constantly, no matter the circumstances The primary approach among commentators is that this constant expectation is maintained even from the depths of distress, and even when rescue seems distant and delayed This hope is rooted in a clear, confident knowledge that God will indeed answer the request [מצודת דוד]. The waiting period itself is viewed as an act of grace. God gives a person the clarity not to give up, helping them understand that a delay in salvation is meant to allow time for necessary spiritual repair [אלשיך].

Another perspective shifts the focus away from times of crisis, suggesting that hope is not reserved only for trouble. The psalmist relies on God constantly, even during periods of peace. This mindset comes from recognizing that success is not a natural guarantee but flows directly from divine providence. Because human existence depends on God at every given moment, constant salvation is needed simply to maintain one's current state [מלבי"ם]. Furthermore, in practical terms, not a single day passes without some form of difficulty, making the need for hope and reliance on God a normal, daily reality [אלשיך].

Alongside this continuous hope is a commitment to multiply praise. The commentators agree that this means offering fresh thanks for the miracles happening in the present, building upon all the praises already sung for past rescues Some emphasize that the psalmist specifically increases his praise even as his pains multiply [מאירי]. Finally, aligning with the idea that existence itself is an ongoing miracle, the psalmist imagines at every moment that he has just been saved from disaster. This deep awareness creates a constant stream of brand new praise, formed second by second [מלבי"ם].
