תהלים, פרק ע״א, פסוק כ״ב

Psalms 71:22Sefaria

True gratitude requires a response that matches the magnitude of the gift. In return for God's salvation and the elevation of his own standing, the psalmist commits to offering profound musical praise. Just as God continuously increases His goodness, the psalmist matches this generosity with a growing outpouring of song and thanks [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. Using the finest songs and musical instruments is not merely a technical performance. Rather, it serves as a powerful method to spark deep, intentional spiritual awakening [מאירי]. At the heart of this gratitude is a recognition of God's truth and unwavering loyalty [ביאור שטיינזלץ], a faithfulness that inherently obligates a person to offer thanks [אבן עזרא].

This divine loyalty is most clearly demonstrated in the fulfillment of the promise to gather the nation from exile. Throughout the years of banishment, sadness and mourning prevailed, causing all musical instruments to remain silent. It is only with the dawn of redemption that complete joy becomes possible, allowing public music and open celebration to finally return [רד״ק].

The expression of this joy involves different forms of praise and various musical instruments, each serving a distinct purpose. One approach suggests a division between the specific thanks offered for personal favors granted by God, and the broader, more general praise directed toward Him simply because He is the Holy One of Israel [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective focuses on the nature of the instruments themselves. When giving thanks for the revival of the nation and celebrating God as his Lord, the psalmist uses an instrument that produces a loud, clear sound. Conversely, when singing about his own personal greatness and elevated status, he selects an instrument with a much softer tone. This careful choice ensures he does not appear to boast about his own royal position, maintaining a clear recognition that God alone is the true King [אלשיך].

Ultimately, the entire purpose of this musical praise and gratitude is to sanctify God's name throughout the world. When God fulfills His promises and brings salvation to His people, His name becomes sanctified among them [רד״ק]. Through this process, the nation itself achieves such a high level of holiness that it becomes truly fitting to call Him the Holy One of Israel [אלשיך].
