אֱֽלֹהַ֗י פַּ֭לְּטֵנִי מִיַּ֣ד רָשָׁ֑ע מִכַּ֖ף מְעַוֵּ֣ל וְחוֹמֵֽץ׃

A desperate cry to God for rescue from the grip of wicked and oppressive forces captures a sense of escalating danger. As the prayer unfolds, the threat grows more intense and immediate. This plea is a direct request for God to extract and save the victim from impending harm [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The primary approach among commentators views the enemies in this prayer as a reflection of King David's personal experience during a bitter rebellion. In this context, the wicked force represents his son Absalom and his followers who rose up against him, while the unjust and oppressive figure points to his traitorous advisor, Ahithophel [רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. Broadening the scope to a national level, the prayer serves as a timeless plea for all generations of Israel to be saved from any nation that constantly seeks their destruction [מאירי]. Taking a completely different, spiritual approach, the enemy is not a flesh-and-blood human at all. Instead, the wicked force is the evil inclination and the accusing Satan. In this light, the request expresses a priority, as the author begs God to save him from his own inner evil even more desperately than he asks for protection from a physical thief or wicked person [אלשיך].

The nature of this enemy is characterized by deep injustice and robbery. The aggressor is someone who actively commits wrongs [ביאור שטיינזלץ] and acts as a ruthless thief. This describes a person who greedily snatches away what belongs to others, much like a glutton who selfishly grabs his own portion along with his friend's [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם, אבן עזרא, תורה תמימה].

This harsh description aligns with the intensifying danger woven throughout the prayer. The transition from asking to be saved from the enemy's general reach to being rescued from their very grasp is deliberate. This tighter grip symbolizes a terrifying moment where the enemy has already physically trapped the victim. Because the immediate danger has worsened, the characterization of the enemy also becomes more severe, shifting from a general label of wickedness to the specific, brutal reality of an unjust and thieving oppressor [מלבי״ם].
