Ruth 4:18Sefaria

וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ תּוֹלְד֣וֹת פָּ֔רֶץ פֶּ֖רֶץ הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־חֶצְרֽוֹן׃

The conclusion of the narrative shifts from a personal, intimate story to the grand historical sweep of the Davidic dynasty. The family history, though complex and at times controversial, forms the very foundation of Israel's monarchy and its ultimate redemption. The focus now centers on the continuous lineage and history of Perez [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

King David's descent from Ruth the Moabite sparked debate and caused some to question his legitimacy for the throne. By tracing his roots directly back to Perez, the son of Judah, his pure tribal lineage is firmly established [רש״י, צאינה וראינה]. This serves as a direct response to critics. Just as Perez was born to Tamar under circumstances that appeared scandalous yet ultimately produced deeply righteous descendants, the union of Boaz and Ruth was entirely guided by Heaven, despite the unusual events at the threshing floor [אגרת שמואל].

The name Perez itself denotes breaking through or making a breach. This reflects the royal nature of David and points toward the future Messiah, who is destined to break a path among the nations. Beginning the count from Perez also places David exactly as the tenth generation, a number that embodies holiness and perfection [אשכול הכופר]. Furthermore, Perez's legacy justifies Boaz's own actions. Just as Perez bypassed his brother Zerah to claim the birthright, Boaz bypassed a closer relative to marry Ruth, demonstrating that there is no shame in acting swiftly to achieve spiritual completion [אגרת שמואל].

The record of these generations is written in a uniquely complete form, mirroring the exact state of the world at the creation of heaven and earth. Following the sin of the first man, humanity lost six elevated qualities, such as an extended lifespan and spiritual radiance, leaving subsequent generations diminished. These lost traits will only be restored through the line of Perez, which will eventually bring forth the Messiah to eliminate death from the world [צאינה וראינה, מנחת שי, אגרת שמואל]. Additionally, this complete form hints at the two central pillars of this lineage: King David and the Messiah [אשכול הכופר]. The primary approach among commentators is that the immediate repetition of Perez's name indicates his status as a completely righteous individual, assured of a portion in both this world and the world to come.

This genealogical record is not merely a list of ancestors but a steady ascent in greatness. The generations are refined like flour sifted to reveal a precious pearl, which is David. While the early leaders up to Salmon held the rank of princes, the family elevated to the status of royalty from Boaz onward [אלשיך, אשכול הכופר]. Ruth's integration into the family did not dilute its holiness. Rather, her profound righteousness acted as a refining crucible, elevating the dynasty to unprecedented royal heights [אלשיך]. The lineage then continues to Hezron, a name rooted in the word for a courtyard. It suggests that this very dynasty, which began by breaking boundaries, is ultimately destined to build the courtyards of God's Temple [אשכול הכופר].
