Deuteronomy 10:14Sefaria

The vast expanse of the universe, from the visible skies to the highest unseen spiritual realms of angels, rests under God's absolute control Recognizing this infinite greatness sharpens the incomprehensible contrast between the majesty of creation and the intimate relationship God chooses to maintain with humanity. Because God is the source and owner of all existence, He lacks absolutely nothing. Therefore, human observance of the commandments is not meant to fulfill any divine need. Rather, the commandments are given entirely out of love and kindness, purely for the benefit of humanity Contemplating this immense cosmic power is meant to awaken a true, profound awe of His majesty in the human heart

The celestial architecture itself reflects a deep physical and spiritual division. The heavens are separated into two distinct realms [תורה תמימה]. This can be understood as the difference between the outermost starless sphere that envelops the universe and the inner spheres where the stars are fixed [רבנו בחיי], or as the profound gap between the physical skies we recognize and the transcendent spiritual worlds that emanate beyond them [רקנאטי].

Against this cosmic backdrop, a deep philosophical discussion emerges regarding the purpose of creation and humanity's place within it. One perspective suggests that human beings are inherently inferior to the higher spiritual worlds. From this viewpoint, God's decision to choose the Patriarchs, despite their lowliness compared to the angels, reveals His immense humility. This divine choice serves as a moral blueprint, teaching us to love and draw close to the stranger and the vulnerable [כלי יקר]. However, the primary approach among commentators reverses this hierarchy, viewing the physical world as the absolute pinnacle of creation. The entire cosmos, including the celestial spheres, star systems, and higher realms, was created solely to serve and sustain the earth In fact, the earth and everything in it exist entirely because of God's desire for the Patriarchs Through their righteous actions, human beings sustain all worlds, both lower and higher. When human deeds successfully draw the Divine Presence down to earth, the physical world is elevated, ultimately becoming greater and more significant than the heavens themselves

This expansive worldview carries immediate practical demands for human life. For spiritually elevated individuals who feel an intense and intimate connection to God, the cosmic order serves as a strict reminder that if even the highest angels and seraphim are bound by God's decrees, no human being is ever exempt from the practical, physical observance of the law [העמק דבר]. Recognizing that the Master of the Universe, who could have chosen any other nation or simply remained satisfied with His angels [בכור שור], deliberately reached down to this lowly world to embrace the Patriarchs, should inspire profound humility. It calls upon a person to abandon all stubbornness and commit completely to a loving, devoted service of God [רש״ר הירש].
