True devotion to God moves beyond the realm of the heart and mind, demanding concrete action. Love and reverence are not meant to remain abstract feelings; they find their tangible expression in the careful observance of God's instructions.

These instructions carry distinct purposes. Some commentators explain that certain directives represent the positive duties a person must actively perform, while other laws establish the moral boundaries within which one must live [רש״ר הירש]. Another perspective views these boundaries as representing the traditions of the Oral law. Complex legal rulings are purposefully left unmentioned to address the ordinary individual rather than the advanced scholar. The everyday person is simply asked to uphold the clear, established laws set before them without needing to engage in deep legal analysis [העמק דבר].

The ultimate purpose behind these obligations is entirely focused on human welfare. Earlier instructions ask what God requires of the people, a phrasing that could mistakenly suggest God has a personal need for human obedience. To completely reject this idea, the primary approach among commentators is that the Divine demand provides no benefit to God Himself. Instead, the requirements exist entirely for the benefit of the individual, allowing a person to earn a reward [רש״י, מזרחי, שפתי חכמים, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

A deeper layer of this reward involves the expectation to guard oneself against wrongdoing. A person might mistakenly assume that a reward is only earned through active good deeds, much like a human king who pays workers only for their active labor and never for sitting idle. However, in the service of God, an individual who simply sits and resists the urge to sin receives a full reward, exactly as if they had performed a positive action. The very act of holding back from wrongdoing is ultimately for the person's own profound benefit [דברי דוד].
