Ecclesiastes 3:5Sefaria

Life's cycles involve a constant movement between breaking down and building up, as well as between intimacy and distance. Even the most basic human actions, whether physical or emotional, are governed by precise timing and shifting circumstances.

On a practical level, clearing away stones refers to removing them when they become a nuisance or an obstacle in a home. Conversely, gathering them implies collecting these same materials later when they are needed for construction Beyond the physical act, commentators offer deeper symbolic meanings. One approach views the stones as a metaphor for boundaries within a marriage. Casting them away represents the removal of physical barriers during a time of purity, while gathering them refers to establishing boundaries of distance during a time of impurity to avoid overstepping religious laws [תורה תמימה]. On a national and historical scale, the stones represent the people of Israel and the Temple. The scattering of stones symbolizes the destruction of the Temple and the dispersion of the nation into exile. Gathering them illustrates the future redemption, the ingathering of the exiles, and the foundation for rebuilding

The focus then shifts from physical materials to human emotion and connection, specifically the act of wrapping one's arms around another out of love [מצודת ציון]. Naturally, human desire is bound by time. There are moments to pursue love and intimacy, and other circumstances that require a person to step back and avoid physical closeness This concept also applies to social and moral choices. A person should actively draw near and embrace the company of righteous individuals, while making a clear point to distance themselves from the wicked [תורה תמימה].

At the deepest level, this dynamic of closeness and distance reflects the relationship between God and His people. The time for embracing represents moments of favor when God draws Israel near and connects with them. Conversely, the time for distancing symbolizes periods of exile and hiddenness, when God pushes the nation away from Him
