אסתר, פרק ד׳, פסוק ט״ו

Esther 4:15Sefaria

וַתֹּ֥אמֶר אֶסְתֵּ֖ר לְהָשִׁ֥יב אֶֽל־מׇרְדֳּכָֽי׃

At a critical crossroads, Esther accepts the heavy burden placed upon her, shifting from hesitation to bold action. Realizing the truth of Mordecai's warning, she accepts his judgment [אבן עזרא] and sends a fateful message through a courier [ביאור שטיינזלץ] to gather all the Jews of Shushan [יוסף אבן יחיא].

The nature of her response carries deep emotional weight. Rather than sending a harsh reply, her message is meant to comfort Mordecai and calm his troubled spirit [מנות הלוי]. Alternatively, she seeks to change his negative perception of her initial hesitation. She explains that her reluctance was never a refusal to sacrifice her life, but rather a profound fear that she is unworthy of having a miracle performed through her [שלום אסתר].

Furthermore, this message is intended for Mordecai alone. By keeping her true intentions hidden from the public and maintaining the illusion that she favors Haman, she ensures that the Jewish people will not rely on her political influence in the royal court. Instead, they must turn inward and focus entirely on genuine repentance [אלשיך].

Her call to action demonstrates the ultimate level of self-sacrifice. She demands a public fast, knowing that when physical drives are subdued, divine wisdom and God's providence shine much more brightly. This fast must include everyone, even the sinners among the nation. Just as the holy incense required a foul-smelling spice to be complete, a community fast is only whole when those who have strayed participate in repentance. Beyond the immediate physical danger, her agreement carries a devastating personal cost. She understands that by approaching King Ahasuerus willingly to save her nation—rather than being taken by force as she had been until now—she will become permanently forbidden to Mordecai according to Jewish law. Even if she survives the ordeal, she will lose him forever [ישע אלהים].
