עזרא, פרק ט׳, פסוק ג׳

Ezra 9:3Sefaria

A leader's vision for his people can sometimes shatter against the harsh reality of their actions. Ezra arrived in the Land of Israel carrying spiritual authority, fully expecting to elevate the nation to new heights. Instead, he faces a horrifying truth: the society requires a fundamental and basic repair before it can even begin to grow [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Adding to his agony is the realization of what could have been. The people of that generation were truly worthy of a complete redemption and a great miracle, much like those experienced in the past. However, their severe sins actively prevented this, and Ezra is overwhelmed by a deep sadness over this tragic missed opportunity [חומת אנך].

Consumed by the intensity of his sorrow, Ezra reacts with intense physical grief, tearing his garments [מצודת דוד]. He goes as far as pulling hair from his head and beard as a profound sign of mourning [רב סעדיה גאון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Normally restricted, this extreme act of plucking his hair was permitted to him as a temporary exception, serving as a necessary expression of the immense dread that gripped him over the people's behavior [חומת אנך].

Following this initial shock, Ezra falls into a state of total devastation. Commentators offer several ways to understand his emotional collapse. One approach views his reaction as a profound silence and paralysis; he is struck mute by the sheer astonishment and deep sadness of what he has learned [מצודת דוד, רב סעדיה גאון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Others interpret his state as a feeling of deep loneliness, misery, and total abandonment [רש״י, מלבי״ם], while some suggest it is an expression of great anger [רב סעדיה גאון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Finally, his condition is understood as a severe mental panic. He is so overwhelmed that all normal human concerns vanish, leaving him entirely unable to focus on eating or drinking. This complete consumption by grief naturally explains why he begins fasting immediately afterward [רלב״ג].
