פרשת תולדות

Genesis 28:1Sefaria

After the events surrounding the transfer of the blessings, a crucial moment of guidance takes place as a father prepares his son to build his own family. Jacob approaches his father burdened with shame and fear over the recent deception. Recognizing this hesitation, Isaac immediately offers a blessing. His goal is to ease his son's fears, showing that he holds no ill will and fully validates Jacob's actions [העמק דבר]. This blessing is granted freely and with complete clarity. Rebecca's previous intervention had opened Isaac's eyes to the true reality of the situation [רש ר הירש], and he now acts either under the direct influence of her words or from a personal realization that had naturally matured within him [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The primary approach among commentators is that this initial mention of a blessing serves as a general introduction, with the actual details following shortly after [רד״ק, ביאור יש״ר]. Conversely, another perspective suggests that this is a distinct, standalone blessing directed toward the World to Come. However, this profound spiritual reward is conditional, depending entirely on Jacob fulfilling the upcoming instruction to avoid marrying a Canaanite woman [מלבי״ם].

Immediately following the blessing, Isaac issues a strict directive. The instructions are delivered with a dual tone, combining a severe warning with sound advice [העמק דבר]. Isaac strictly forbids Jacob from marrying a local Canaanite woman. Because Jacob is now the recognized heir to Abraham's legacy, he must maintain the same standard of separation from the Canaanites that his grandfather established [ביאור יש״ר]. Furthermore, this strict boundary ensures that Jacob will not repeat the marital mistakes of his brother Esau [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The fact that Isaac waited until his old age to arrange a marriage for Jacob mirrors Abraham's own delay and raises a natural question. While one might assume that these aging fathers simply struggled to part with the sons born to them late in life, the true reason is rooted in divine timing. The delay was orchestrated by God, as they had to wait until Jacob's destined wife was born [ברכת אשר על התורה].

Instead of a local marriage, Isaac directs his son toward the family of Laban, despite Laban's well-known wicked nature. Sending Jacob into such a corrupt environment is an intentional spiritual test. Isaac observed that Abraham had fathered Ishmael, and he himself had fathered Esau, leading him to worry that the spiritual repair of humanity remained incomplete. By forcing Jacob to face a wicked and opposing force like Laban, Jacob's true character will be tested. If he can withstand this negative influence and still raise a completely righteous family, it will prove beyond doubt that he has successfully fulfilled his destiny [שפתי כהן].
