וַתֹּ֤אמֶר רִבְקָה֙ אֶל־יִצְחָ֔ק קַ֣צְתִּי בְחַיַּ֔י מִפְּנֵ֖י בְּנ֣וֹת חֵ֑ת אִם־לֹקֵ֣חַ יַ֠עֲקֹ֠ב אִשָּׁ֨ה מִבְּנֽוֹת־חֵ֤ת כָּאֵ֙לֶּה֙ מִבְּנ֣וֹת הָאָ֔רֶץ לָ֥מָּה לִּ֖י חַיִּֽים׃

Navigating a deep family crisis requires immense diplomatic wisdom. Rebekah faces the urgent task of saving her son Jacob from immediate danger without tearing her household apart. When speaking to Isaac, she deliberately conceals Esau's plot to murder Jacob. The primary approach among commentators is that she hides this reality out of profound wisdom and several key motives. She wants to avoid the sin of speaking badly about others [אור החיים] and wishes to spare her elderly, blind husband from deep sorrow [מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. Furthermore, she seeks to prevent any additional conflict from erupting within the family [צרור המור, ביאור יש״ר]. There is also a practical fear: since Isaac loves Esau, he might simply not believe the murder plot. He could become angry with Rebekah and even stop Jacob from fleeing, convinced that Esau would never actually harm his brother [ביאור יש״ר, בכור שור].

Instead of presenting Jacob as a man running for his life, Rebekah provides a natural and highly justified reason for his departure: the need to find a suitable wife. She expresses her deep frustration, which the primary approach among commentators understands as a feeling of intense disgust and revulsion [רש״י, ביאור יש״ר, ברטנורא]. Others view her words as an expression of severe distress and a genuine fear of death [אבן עזרא, מחוקקי יהודה, אבי עזר].

Rebekah blames her suffering on the local Hittite women, specifically referencing Esau's wives who are already making her life miserable [רד״ק, ביאור יש״ר, רש״ר הירש]. She warns that if Jacob marries similar local women, her life will no longer be worth living. Beyond her distaste for Esau's wives, there is a tactical layer to her warning. She is afraid that Jacob, finding himself in danger, might try to marry the daughter of a local leader to secure a military alliance against Esau [חזקוני, צאינה וראינה]. Moreover, by stressing her objection to the women of the land, she prevents Isaac from suggesting a match with other nearby relatives, such as the families of Ishmael or Lot. This carefully steers Isaac toward the only remaining option: sending Jacob far away to her own family in Haran [אלשיך].

Rebekah's diplomatic plan is a complete success. Isaac understands the underlying message and, with a full heart, calls for Jacob. He blesses him with the blessing of Abraham and grants him permission to travel. As a result, Jacob does not have to run away secretly or empty-handed. He leaves home proudly, simultaneously fulfilling his mother's urgent command to save his own life and his father's command to find a proper wife [אלשיך, ביאור יש״ר].
