II Chronicles 3:2Sefaria

The construction of the Temple in Jerusalem was a massive undertaking that required precise timing and immense preparation. Rather than beginning the project immediately upon ascending the throne, King Solomon waited until the fourth year of his reign. This delay was entirely practical, as the first four years were fully dedicated to completing the extensive preparations necessary for such a complex building project [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The specific timing to begin the actual construction fell in the second month of the year, known as Iyar. Practical considerations dictated this choice as well. Building during the winter months was impossible due to the freezing weather. While the spring weather of the first month, Nisan, was suitable, the work was postponed out of respect for the Passover holiday [רש"י].

The historical record emphasizes this timing with a double reference to the number two. The primary approach among commentators is that this repetition pinpoints the exact day the work began, indicating the second day of the month of Iyar rather than the very beginning of the month. Alternatively, some scholars suggest it refers to the second day of the week, meaning the construction began on a Monday [רד"ק, מצודת דוד]. Others view the phrasing as a stylistic choice, serving to smoothly connect the month with the year of Solomon's reign [רש"י, רד"ק].

Beyond the specific date, this detail provides insight into the ancient calendar. According to rabbinic tradition, the double reference teaches the method for calculating the reigns of Israelite kings. Because a king's year officially begins in the month of Nisan, the month of Iyar serves a dual purpose. It is the second month of the standard calendar, and it is also the second month of Solomon's fourth year as king [רד"ק, מלבי"ם].
