I Samuel 17:45Sefaria

The climax of the confrontation between David and the Philistine champion highlights a deep contrast between their sources of power, transforming a physical battle into a profound test of faith. Goliath relies entirely on his physical strength and his array of weapons, namely his sword, spear, and javelin This specific javelin is an offensive weapon meant for striking, distinct from the defensive armor he wore on his shoulders earlier in the encounter [רלב״ג].

In stark contrast, David intentionally arrives without matching military equipment. He does this to prove that he does not depend on human strength or natural strategies [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם]. Instead, his absolute trust and his true weapon is the name of God, through which he expects a miraculous victory David shifts the focus from a personal duel to a Divine struggle. He makes it clear that the battle is not between the two of them; rather, Goliath is fighting God Himself, and David is simply acting as His representative [אלשיך]. The defiance hurled by the Philistine is understood as a disgrace brought upon the armies of Israel [מצודת דוד], and ultimately, as a direct insult to God [שטיינזלץ, אלשיך].

This clash serves as a vital historical correction. In the earlier days of Eli the High Priest, the Ark of the Covenant was captured by the Philistines because the Israelites failed to place their true trust in God. Now, David enters the battlefield with complete and unwavering faith. Because the Philistine dared to challenge God directly, it is certain that God will be the One to fight him and deliver justice [חומת אנך].
