I Samuel 17:23Sefaria

Right in the middle of David's conversation with his brothers, the battlefield dynamics shift dramatically. The Philistine champion advances toward the Israelite camp, presenting a more immediate and terrifying threat than in his previous appearances. Unlike his earlier movements, where he simply stepped out into the valley dividing the two armies, he is now emboldened. He dares to physically climb the mountain toward the Israelite encampment [מלבי״ם]. He makes this aggressive advance directly from within the ranks of his own army [מצודת דוד].

The nature of the Philistine formation has also changed. The warrior no longer emerges merely from their general camp, but from their active battle lines. This indicates that the Philistines have fully arranged their troops and are prepared to launch an immediate attack. This heightened state of readiness explains the sudden panic of the Israelites, causing them to flee as he approaches [מלבי״ם].

The description of his emergence carries a dual meaning. On a literal level, he approaches from the plains where the Philistine army is stationed, a detail that perfectly complements his advance from the military ranks [רד״ק]. However, a deeper tradition interprets the phrasing as a hint to his origins, suggesting that a hundred men had relations with his mother, Orpah, after she separated from Naomi and Ruth This tradition even connects to his title as a champion or middleman, implying he was biologically formed from many different men. While some embrace this view, others reject the explanation entirely, questioning the natural possibility of a woman conceiving from multiple men at the same time [רד״ק].

As the warrior takes his position opposite the Israelites, he shouts the exact same insults and curses he has been repeating for days. The crucial difference is that this time, David is present to hear them [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
