The shepherd's physical appearance completely contradicts the image of a seasoned soldier, making him look like someone entirely incapable of surviving a real fight [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators is that this heavy disdain stems directly from the boy's youth and delicate features, which broadcast a total lack of combat experience.

His young age clearly shows that he lacks the tactical knowledge and strategies that only come from years of warfare [מצודת דוד, חומת אנך]. Furthermore, his handsome features and red cheeks give him a childish look, likely making him appear even younger than he actually is [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. There is a sharp, natural contrast between physical beauty and the harsh reality of a battlefield.
