שמואל א, פרק י״ז, פסוק ל״ח

I Samuel 17:38Sefaria

Moments before the fateful battle against the Philistine giant, a desperate attempt is made to transform a young shepherd into a conventional warrior. The strategy relies on standard military logic, aiming to match the enemy's heavy equipment to level the playing field [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל]. To achieve this, King Saul dresses David in his own personal battle garments [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. These are not loose ceremonial robes, but rather a specialized, tightly fitted base layer designed to allow a warrior agility, over which heavy armor is then secured [אלשיך]. Finally, a protective copper helmet is set upon the young man's head [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The process of putting on this armor suddenly exposes a hidden, dramatic reality regarding the future of the throne. Saul was an exceptionally tall man, yet when the shorter David put on the royal gear, a miracle occurred: the clothing adjusted perfectly to his size. This supernatural fit happened because David had already been anointed with holy oil and was destined to be the true king. When Saul witnessed this undeniable sign, his face fell and he was consumed by jealousy. He cast an evil eye upon the young man, a sharp hostility that David sensed immediately [רש״י, אלשיך].

David, who had no experience with this type of combat, initially agreed to wear the military equipment, believing he could fight effectively in it [מלבי״ם]. But after feeling the king's intense jealousy, and realizing he could not move freely in gear he was completely unaccustomed to, he decided to discard it. Even in this tense moment, David acted with deep respect for the monarch. Rather than stripping off the royal garments all at once, he removed them gradually. He first took off the heavy outer armor, and only then removed the fitted inner clothing, choosing instead to step onto the battlefield in his own unique way [אלשיך].
