שמואל א, פרק י״ז, פסוק ד׳

I Samuel 17:4Sefaria

Out of the tense waiting and fear of war, a terrifying figure steps forward to strike dread into the hearts of the Israelites. A massive warrior emerges from the Philistine camp, boldly standing alone to taunt the opposing army. The primary approach among commentators is that his unique title reflects his physical position in the space between the forces. He broke away from his army's ranks, descended from the mountain into the valley, and positioned himself in the exact area separating the two warring camps [רש"י, מצודת דוד, מלבי"ם]. This was not an isolated incident but a daily occurrence [רד"ק], as he acted as the chosen fighter to conduct a preliminary duel between the armies [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

His repeated march into this neutral zone was a calculated move to break the spirit of the Israelites. Typically, military commanders and officers only engage in combat with opponents of equal rank. Yet this warrior, who was likely one of the Philistine commanders, openly declared his readiness to fight absolutely anyone from the Israelite camp. By doing so, he displayed deep contempt and sent a degrading message, implying that there was not a single Israelite worthy or capable of standing against him [רלב"ג].

Ultimately, his intimidating presence did not stem from any special personal qualities, but purely from his raw physical power and abnormal size [מלבי"ם]. His towering height is recorded using a specific measurement known as a span, which simply represents the distance between a person's outstretched thumb and little finger [מצודת ציון].
