שמואל א, פרק י״ז, פסוק נ״ח

I Samuel 17:58Sefaria

Following an extraordinary victory, King Saul stands before the young hero, David, seeking to understand his roots and character. Although David had previously played music for the king, those encounters occurred only when Saul's spirit was troubled and his mind clouded. Therefore, this moment serves as their first clear and conscious introduction, allowing the king to finally appreciate the young man's true personality and background [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Saul's inquiry about David's father is not a simple request for facts. Seeing such unusual bravery and success in someone so young, the king suspects that the boy might descend from a royal bloodline, such as the family of Perez or Zerah [אלשיך].

David's response is carefully crafted with humility and loyalty, designed to calm any fears Saul might have about his own royal status. By identifying his well-known and respected father as the king's servant, David implies that he, too, is merely a servant. This declaration guarantees that the glory of the victory will belong to Saul, as the public will simply say that the king's servant defeated the enemy [אלשיך, חומת אנך]. Furthermore, the young hero credits his miraculous triumph to the spiritual merit of his righteous and pious father, a man free from sin [אלשיך, חומת אנך].

By naming his hometown of Bethlehem, David provides a way for Saul to easily verify his family background [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This specific location also confirms that he does indeed descend from Perez, whose family settled in that area [אלשיך]. Beyond mere geography, the town's name contains a subtle hint about his martial strength. Because the root of the town's name is linguistically connected to the word for war, David discreetly testifies that he is the son of a mighty warrior and a man of battle [רד״ק].
