I Samuel 17:18Sefaria

A father's concern for his sons on the frontlines prompts a critical errand. Jesse dispatches young David to the battlefield carrying provisions and a vital, multi-layered mission to secure the well-being of his older brothers.

Part of this journey involves delivering a gift to the military officer overseeing the brothers' unit. David brings portions of cheese, which were traditionally sliced into fixed, standard sizes during the cheese-making process [מצודת ציון]. The primary approach among commentators is that this gift was a strategic gesture to win the commander's favor, ensuring he would keep a protective eye on the brothers and treat them with kindness. A traditional perspective, however, identifies this specific officer as Jonathan, the son of King Saul, who was previously known to command a unit of a thousand men [רש״י].

Beyond delivering provisions, David is instructed to personally check on his brothers' welfare. His father's request also includes a more complex task involving the retrieval of a pledge or token. The primary approach among commentators explains this against the economic backdrop of war. Soldiers on the frontlines often lacked ready cash and had to hand over personal items as collateral to purchase food and essential supplies on credit. David's responsibility was to pay off these debts and redeem his brothers' pawned belongings. A slightly different angle suggests that the brothers originally sent a token to their father through a messenger as proof of their desperate need for rations, and David is now returning it alongside the fresh food. Alternatively, David might be bringing valuable items from home for his brothers to use as future collateral during their ongoing deployment [רלב״ג].

In contrast to the financial explanation, another view understands this task strictly as a matter of assurance. Jesse is asking David to return home with reliable news of his brothers' security and survival [רש״י]. Furthermore, a tradition from the Sages introduces a profound legal and family dimension to the errand. According to this view, David was instructed to retrieve conditional divorce documents from his brothers for their wives. This wartime practice was designed to legally sever the marriage bond before a soldier entered combat, protecting the women from being left in marital limbo should their husbands fall in battle or go missing in action [רש״י, רד״ק, מלבי״ם].
