The tense encounter with his older brother does not deter David. Instead of retreating, he continues his inquiries within the Israelite camp. Turning away from Eliab, David approaches another person standing nearby [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

He repeats his earlier inquiry, asking what will be done for the man who defeats the Philistine [מצודת דוד]. Through these repeated questions, David expresses genuine amazement that not a single soldier has stepped forward to confront the taunting enemy [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. In response, the people provide the exact same answer he heard before, confirming the reward promised by the king [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
