שמואל א, פרק כ״א, פסוק א׳

I Samuel 21:1Sefaria

וַיָּ֖קׇם וַיֵּלַ֑ךְ וִיהוֹנָתָ֖ן בָּ֥א הָעִֽיר׃

A difficult moment of parting seals a tense encounter, reflecting the complex emotional states of two close friends as they go their separate ways in the shadow of danger and sorrow. As the men separate, it is David who rises and leaves his hiding place [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Yet, his identity is deliberately left unspoken during his departure. This anonymity captures his immense fear. Driven by deep terror, David moves stealthily and in complete secrecy, slipping away into the unknown [חומת אנך].

In stark contrast, Jonathan returns to civilization. His return is characterized not by the physical journey, but merely by his sudden arrival in the city. This detail reveals his profound emotional turmoil. Overwhelmed by his great love for David and the deep sadness of their separation, Jonathan is completely consumed by his worries and thoughts. He walks in a state of emotional detachment, his feet carrying him forward automatically. Unaware of the path he is taking, he simply finds himself suddenly back inside the city, entirely disconnected from his surroundings due to his heavy heart [חומת אנך].
