The ultimate ideal leader emerges as the absolute embodiment of both human and spiritual perfection. In human nature, certain traits naturally contradict one another: a deep intellectual focus often comes at the expense of practical ability, individuals of great wisdom frequently lack physical strength, and intense intellect can sometimes lead a person away from simple faith. Yet, this future leader will miraculously unite all these virtues without any contradiction, guided by a higher divine power [אברבנאל]. God will bestow upon him a constant and enduring spirit, a stark contrast to the temporary or fleeting prophetic inspiration experienced by leaders of the past [שד״ל]. This supreme prophetic spirit [מצודת דוד, צאינה וראינה, אברבנאל] serves as the divine foundation from which all his other extraordinary qualities flow [רד״ק, אבן עזרא].
The primary approach among commentators is that the leader's virtues operate on three complementary levels: the intellectual, the practical, and the spiritual [מלבי״ם, שטיינזלץ, אברבנאל]. On the intellectual level, he possesses both wisdom and understanding. Wisdom represents the knowledge a person absorbs from teachers, which remains with him at all times. Understanding, however, is the cognitive ability to deduce new concepts and draw fresh insights from that existing foundation of knowledge [מלבי״ם, רד״ק].
The practical level involves counsel and strength. Counsel reflects a deep grasp of how the world works, allowing the leader to correctly weigh options and plan actions [רד״ק, מלבי״ם, שטיינזלץ]. When it comes to strength, there are differing perspectives. Some explain it as the power to fight enemies and overcome disasters [שטיינזלץ, אבן עזרא]. Others argue that because this era will be defined by peace, military might is unnecessary. Instead, this strength is a profound spiritual authority to punish the wicked and execute justice independently, without relying on guards or servants [שד״ל, צאינה וראינה].
The highest and most vital layer is the spiritual one, defined by the knowledge and fear of God. True knowledge is the clear awareness of God's reality and His direct involvement in the world [מלבי״ם]. Simply possessing intellect or cleverness cannot bring genuine success without a deep reverence for heaven; therefore, walking in the paths of justice and morality is the ultimate expression of true knowledge [שד״ל]. These two spiritual traits are completely inseparable. Knowledge holds no value without the fear of God, and a person cannot truly fear God without first knowing and recognizing Him [מלבי״ם].
Empowered by this constant prophetic spirit and supreme wisdom, the leader will transform the way justice is administered. He will not judge based on mere sight or sound, which are easily manipulated and often misleading. Instead, he will pierce through the surface to uncover the inner truth of every matter. Through this profound insight, he will guarantee absolute justice for everyone, offering special protection to the weak and poor who are so often trampled by ordinary legal systems [צאינה וראינה, אברבנאל].
