לֹא־יָרֵ֥עוּ וְלֹֽא־יַשְׁחִ֖יתוּ בְּכׇל־הַ֣ר קׇדְשִׁ֑י כִּֽי־מָלְאָ֣ה הָאָ֗רֶץ דֵּעָה֙ אֶת־יְהֹוָ֔ה כַּמַּ֖יִם לַיָּ֥ם מְכַסִּֽים׃ {ס}

The future era promises a profound transformation of reality, replacing a world of damage and ruin with one of perfect harmony. This dramatic shift in the nature of creation will be driven by an overwhelming, all-encompassing awareness of God that will penetrate every facet of existence.

In this new reality, all harm and destruction will cease. Commentators distinguish between two types of damage that will be eliminated: harm caused for personal benefit, much like the hunting of predatory beasts, and senseless destruction committed without any gain, akin to the strike of a venomous snake [מלבי״ם]. Some interpret this promise literally, explaining that wild animals and serpents will simply lose their dangerous nature and stop injuring others [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. Others take a broader approach, maintaining that evil itself will no longer be able to exist in the world [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. From a spiritual perspective, the end of physical destruction on earth stems from the silencing of negative, accusatory forces in the higher realms, which in turn causes the nations of the world to abandon their destructive ways below [חומת אנך]. This era of absolute peace will encompass the entire Land of Israel, which is envisioned as a holy mountain because it stands spiritually elevated and exalted above all other lands [רד״ק].

The catalyst for this fundamental change is that the land will be entirely filled with the knowledge of God and the study of Torah for its own sake [רש״י, חומת אנך]. This profound awareness will rectify the sin of the first man, eliminate the human inclination toward evil, and reorient the very essence of humanity to focus exclusively on knowing and serving God [נחל שורק]. The guiding principle of this era is that anyone who truly knows God never destroys, but rather builds and repairs [אבן עזרא]. The impact of this divine knowledge will be so powerful that it will even extend to creatures lacking intellect. The physical nature of animals will be transformed as they instinctively recognize that a time of global rectification has arrived, swept up in a wave of awareness they cannot resist [מלבי״ם].

The overwhelming spread of this awareness is likened to water filling an ocean. In this imagery, the sea does not refer to the water itself, but rather to the deep basin where the water gathers [מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. The primary approach among commentators is that just as water fills the ocean floor, hiding every pit and depression until the ground is completely concealed, so too will the knowledge of God completely and endlessly envelop the entire world and all its creatures.

However, this imagery contains deeper layers of meaning. The surface of the sea appears smooth and uniform to the eye, yet it conceals vast differences in depth. Similarly, in the future, it will outwardly appear that all people possess an equal knowledge of God, but in truth, there will be distinct spiritual levels. Those who labored and engaged in Torah study during the hardships of exile will merit grasping deep, hidden secrets, while those who did not exert themselves will only understand the more basic, surface-level concepts [חומת אנך]. Furthermore, just as rivers constantly flow into the sea yet the sea is never full, the ultimate purpose of this future knowledge will be the humbling realization that the Creator can never be completely comprehended. Humanity will recognize the limits of its own understanding, acknowledging that no individual has ever perceived God with the absolute clarity granted to Moses [אהבת יהונתן].
