אֲנִ֣י אָמַ֗רְתִּי בִּדְמִ֥י יָמַ֛י אֵלֵ֖כָה בְּשַׁעֲרֵ֣י שְׁא֑וֹל פֻּקַּ֖דְתִּי יֶ֥תֶר שְׁנוֹתָֽי׃

Facing premature death while still possessing physical strength brings profound feelings of grief and sudden loss. A person in this situation confronts the painful reality that their life is being severed in the middle, and the years they expected to live are vanishing before their eyes. The primary approach among commentators is that this experience is defined by a violent cutting off of life [מצודות, רד״ק, אבן עזרא]. At merely thirty-nine years old, the sick king mourns his descent to the grave long before his natural time [רד״ק].

Others understand this period as the very center of life and the prime of one's years. This state is compared to the stillness of noon, when the sun appears frozen in the middle of the sky [שד״ל, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. It also reflects a physical condition where the body is still full of vitality and life force [אבן עזרא]. Conversely, the end of life can be viewed through the lens of silence and desolation. As a person succumbs to severe illness, their days become empty and quiet [רש״י]. Taking a philosophical approach, time itself only exists in the context of human movement and activity. Therefore, the moment a person begins to die, even if their physical body has not yet perished, their days stop moving and fall into complete stillness [מלבי״ם].

The journey toward death marks the ultimate departure from the world [שד״ל]. This destination does not refer to a spiritual realm of punishment, but simply the physical grave located deep within the earth, standing in absolute contrast to the heavens above [אבן עזרא]. Compounding the sick person's despair was a historical reality. Until that generation, no human being had ever fallen severely ill and recovered. Knowing this, he felt absolutely certain that his fate was sealed and death was inevitable [רש״י].

Looking ahead at the time he would not get to experience, the king mourns his deprivation and loss. He grieves for the remaining years he was supposed to live, as most people naturally survive past the age of fifty [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, אבן עזרא, שד״ל, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. These unlived years are completely erased from the ledger of his life, as if they had never existed at all [מלבי״ם]. Yet, a completely opposite tradition exists regarding his fate. In this view, he was actually remembered by heaven for good, resulting in his life being extended and those missing years being granted back to him [תרגום יונתן המובא ברש״י].
