The dramatic collapse of the Babylonian empire marks a shift from the mere loss of wealth to the complete loss of political power and rule [מלבי״ם]. This downfall is God's direct punishment against Babylon for placing a heavy burden on the Israelites [חומת אנך]. As a result of His judgment, the once-mighty superpower will be reduced to a small, forgotten place [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Babylon is commanded to sit in absolute silence [מצודת ציון, רד״ק] and to hide away in the dark [מצודת דוד]. The primary approach among commentators is that these actions reflect a state of deep mourning, much like a widow consumed by grief [מצודת דוד, שד״ל]. Furthermore, this retreat into the shadows is driven by intense shame. Having been transformed from a great empire into a captive exile, Babylon must hide so that its voice is no longer heard and its presence is no longer seen in the streets [מלבי״ם, רד״ק].

In the past, Babylon was known as the mistress of kingdoms, a title that showed its absolute authority and dominion over other nations [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד]. Now, it is made clear that the people who once used this title [אבן עזרא] will never do so again. This harsh reality is meant to shatter any lingering hope or illusion that Babylon might one day return to its former greatness, emphasizing that the loss of its royal status is absolute and final [מלבי״ם, רד״ק].
