ישעיהו, פרק מ״ז, פסוק ד׳

Isaiah 47:4Sefaria

גֹּאֲלֵ֕נוּ יְהֹוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת שְׁמ֑וֹ קְד֖וֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

The downfall of a mighty empire is not merely a random shift in global power, but a deliberate act directed from above. As Babylon faces its ultimate collapse, the destruction serves a highly specific purpose: paving the way for the freedom of the Israelites. The primary approach among commentators is that all the destruction and punishments brought upon Babylon are executed by God with the clear goal of redeeming the Israelites from their exile there.

This rescue is driven by a higher motive. The prophet expresses the hope that salvation will arrive for the sake of God's honor, rather than relying on the merit of the people [חומת אנך]. Looking toward the future, there will come a time when the Israelites themselves will proudly point to their savior and declare Him as their true redeemer [אבן עזרא].

To understand how God operates in this historical drama, two distinct aspects of His character are highlighted. First, He acts as the supreme ruler who commands all armies and directs the course of the battle. It is God Himself who fights on behalf of the Israelites to bring about the defeat of Babylon, rather than any human military force [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Second, His actions serve a universal purpose. It is precisely through the harsh punishment of Babylon and the resulting rescue of the Israelites that the true holiness of God will be revealed and recognized across the entire world [רד״ק].
