Jeremiah 23:39Sefaria

The divine response to a nation's sins and their open mockery of prophecy arrives as a swift, decisive, and perfectly mirrored disaster. Because the people treated prophetic messages with contempt, viewing them as nothing more than a heavy, bothersome burden [מצודת דוד], God stands ready to bring ruin upon them immediately [רד״ק]. This reaction creates a total and absolute disconnect between God, His people, and their city.

The punishment unfolds in two complementary ways. The primary approach understands God's reaction as an act of profound forgetting. Just as the people broke their covenant, forgot God's words, and rejected His guidance as an unbearable weight, God will now forget them. He will cast them aside exactly as a person throws off a heavy, painful burden, delivering a precise measure-for-measure consequence The intensity of this divine forgetting is absolute and complete [רד״ק]. A second perspective views this action not just as an emotional distancing, but as a physical removal and destruction. In this light, the people will face a violent shaking and a physical uprooting from their homeland

This uprooting is followed by total abandonment. The act of forsaking the nation is so intense that it is likened to violently tearing the people away from their roots [רד״ק]. Furthermore, this abandonment extends beyond the people to the city itself. When God leaves the city, He removes His Divine Presence from within its walls. Stripped of His protection, the city will inevitably fall into the hands of the Chaldean enemy Ultimately, as God withdraws, the people are cast out from His presence entirely, condemned to exile and physically distanced from Him [רד״ק].
