ירמיהו, פרק כ״ג, פסוק ל״ו

Jeremiah 23:36Sefaria

A sharp rebuke is directed at the cynical and disrespectful use of sacred prophetic language. The people and their false leaders took God's messages, emptied them of their original meaning, and twisted them to serve their own corrupt goals.

The concept of prophecy is inherently tied to the idea of a heavy load. It is a profound weight placed upon the prophet, a message so intense that it feels like a burning fire within, which he is compelled to release [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, this idea reflects the physical act of speaking, representing the words a prophet carries upon his lips [מצודת דוד, רד״ק בשם אביו]. Because the people severely distort this sacred concept, the prophet demands that they stop invoking it entirely.

The exact nature of this distortion takes several forms. One approach focuses on sheer disrespect. While the people outwardly use the proper terminology for prophecy, internally they view it as a mere nuisance [רד״ק]. They twist the concept, complaining that the prophetic message is an oppressive burden on the listeners, completely ignoring that the true weight is carried by the prophet himself [מצודת דוד].

Another perspective points to a deliberate theft and manipulation of the truth. False prophets would approach genuine prophets to learn the exact, obscure wording of God's message. Once they obtained these words, they intentionally twisted their meaning to mislead the public and build their own following. God entrusted these obscure messages only to true prophets, knowing they would faithfully deliver them, but the imposters warped the divine intent. Consequently, severe punishment is destined for anyone who mockingly questions the nature of God's message [רש״י].

A third view highlights a stylistic degradation of the divine word. The people began treating prophetic messages as simple fables, poetry, or empty rhetoric. While poetic flourishes are perfectly acceptable in ordinary human conversation, it is strictly forbidden to reduce the words of the living God to mere literary devices [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, the primary consensus is that the people and the false prophets willfully manipulated divine communication to suit their own desires [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The warning concludes by invoking God as the master of all heavenly and earthly armies, emphasizing His absolute power to execute the promised punishment. The prophet pointedly refers to Him as our God rather than your God, highlighting a tragic reality: those who so casually mock the divine word do not genuinely believe in Him [רד״ק].
