ירמיהו, פרק כ״ג, פסוק י״ב

Jeremiah 23:12Sefaria

The consequence of choosing a life of sin is pictured as a terrifying, unavoidable collapse. A person walking down a wicked path eventually finds themselves trapped in a situation with no possible escape. The commentators describe this punishment through a vivid image of someone trying to walk on incredibly slippery ground, where it is incredibly easy to lose one's footing. However, the danger is severely multiplied because this journey takes place in absolute darkness. As [רש״י] points out, navigating a slippery road in broad daylight is already dangerous, and walking on a perfectly stable road in the pitch black is equally risky. When these two hazards are combined, disaster is guaranteed.

To make matters worse, [רד״ק] adds a third element that ensures a swift and sudden downfall. The people are not merely trying to walk blindly on a slick surface; they are actively being pushed. An unseen force shoves them from behind, making it completely impossible to catch their balance before they crash to the ground.

This frightening physical scenario reflects a deeper spiritual crisis. According to [מלבי״ם], if the spiritual leaders of the time, the prophets and priests, had done their jobs and provided moral light for the nation, the people might have safely navigated even a slippery path. Because these leaders failed to guide them, the entire nation was left in the dark, doomed to stumble and be violently pushed down.

Ultimately, this catastrophic fall is not a random accident. It is the direct result of Divine intervention. God actively brings this disaster upon them as a consequence of their actions. This judgment takes place exactly when their appointed time of reckoning arrives. The primary approach among commentators, including [מצודת דוד], [מצודת ציון], and [שטיינזלץ], is that this marks the specific moment when God calls their sins to mind. Recognizing that their wrongdoing has reached its absolute limit, He repays them fully for their actions.
