A direct link exists between the moral decay of the people, led by their spiritual leaders, and the physical destruction of the land. False prophets deceive the public into believing they are safe from harm, even as the devastating consequences of their actions are already visible in the world around them [רד״ק].
The nation is overwhelmed by severe sins. Chief among these is widespread adultery, a moral collapse fueled in part by the influence of the false prophets [מצודת דוד]. Another major offense is the rampant use of false oaths and curses As a direct result of these transgressions, the land itself suffers, becoming ruined, desolate, and gloomy This disaster is clearly seen in nature, as the grazing pastures near the wilderness completely dry up
The people's behavior reflects a deep spiritual sickness. The primary approach among commentators notes that their speed and enthusiasm are channeled exclusively toward doing evil, rather than fulfilling commandments or serving God Another perspective suggests that their path is driven entirely by their own corrupt desires and passions, which they follow blindly [רש״י, רד״ק].
Furthermore, the strength and mental fortitude of the people are completely misdirected, disconnected from truth and justice Rather than using their power to confront the false prophets and stop their lies, they use it to silence the true prophets of God [רד״ק]. Alternatively, this lack of strength can be understood as part of their punishment. Just as they eagerly rushed to commit evil, their physical might will ultimately fail them, leaving them weak and unable to defend themselves against the coming enemy [מלבי״ם, שטיינזלץ].
