Jeremiah steps forward to shatter the dangerous illusions of freedom planted by false prophets. The conflict centers on the sacred vessels of the Temple. The primary approach among commentators is that these are the specific items taken to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar during the initial exile of Jeconiah, which occurred at the beginning of Zedekiah's reign.

False prophets were spreading a comforting but deceptive message. They promised the nation that these sacred items would quickly be brought back from Babylon to Jerusalem [מצודת דוד]. Jeremiah urgently needed to warn the nation because this specific lie was incredibly dangerous. The false promise regarding the Temple vessels caused the people and the priests to jump to a completely wrong conclusion. They firmly believed that the return of the vessels meant they were about to gain total freedom and completely shake off the control of the Babylonian king [מלבי״ם].
