Jeremiah 39:16Sefaria

Amidst the sweeping chaos of national destruction, a deeply personal message of divine protection emerges for a single individual. Ebed-melech the Ethiopian risked his own life, directly defying the city officials, to pull the prophet Jeremiah out of a sinking, muddy pit Because of this heroic act to save a prophet of God, he is granted immediate rescue from the surrounding horrors as a reward in this world, alongside the reward waiting for him in the future [חומת אנך].

God declares that disaster, rather than blessing, is about to strike the city. Because the people stubbornly refused to repent, the good that was once promised to them is now canceled [מצודת דוד]. Past hardships were designed to wake the people up and encourage them to change their ways so that God could ultimately bless them. Now, however, the judgment is sealed entirely for ruin. Following Jeremiah’s final, unheeded warnings to the king, the city's downfall has become an absolute necessity [מלבי״ם].

Ebed-melech is told that these terrifying events will unfold right in front of him, meaning he will remain in the city to witness the harsh prophecies becoming reality with his own eyes Yet, hidden within this prospect is a profound promise of comfort. Ebed-melech might have reasonably feared that the angry local officials would execute him for his defiance before the city even fell. Instead, because he placed his trust in God, he is assured protection from both the local leaders and the invading Chaldean army. He will live to see the city captured and God’s word fulfilled, watching the very officials who threatened him fall by the sword while he safely escapes with his life [רד״ק, מלבי״ם].
