איוב, פרק א׳, פסוק י״ח

Job 1:18Sefaria

The relentless chain of disasters striking Job reaches its devastating climax with the arrival of a fourth and final messenger. This messenger carries the heaviest burden of all, bringing the tragic news about the fate of Job's children, who were gathered together eating at the time [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The sequence of these catastrophic events unfolds in a highly realistic and natural manner. This storytelling style is deliberately chosen to reinforce the reader's faith and preserve the profound credibility of the message, regardless of whether the account is factual history or a moral parable [תקות אנוש].

As the new messenger arrives on the scene [ביאור שטיינזלץ], a subtle shift occurs in the rhythm of the unfolding tragedy. The primary approach among commentators is that the rapid pace continues uninterrupted, with the final messenger appearing while the previous one is still delivering his grim report [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ, אבן עזרא].

However, other commentators note a deliberate pause in the sequence. In this view, the fourth messenger waits patiently for the third to finish speaking, rather than interrupting as the others had done. This delay is rooted in the very nature of the news being delivered. The first three reports detailed the loss of property, functioning as a single, continuous phase of testing. The loss of children, by contrast, represents an entirely new and separate trial that requires a distinct separation [מלבי״ם].

Furthermore, because the news of death is so overwhelmingly bitter, God orchestrated this brief pause. Out of a measure of compassion for Job, God ensured the messenger waited so that the crushing blow of his children's death would not strike him with double force while he was still absorbing the shock of the previous disaster [אלשיך].
