As the effort to rebuild Jerusalem progressed, the ongoing repair work was taken up by a dedicated group of priests. Rather than living within the city limits, these priests made their homes in the plains and the region immediately encircling Jerusalem. Coming in from the surrounding outskirts, they took on their share of the labor to ensure the city's defenses were fully strengthened.
