Rebuilding the defenses of Jerusalem required immense dedication, with certain groups taking on extraordinary shares of the labor. Hanun and the residents of Zanoah committed to a massive, two-part restoration project that stood out in its sheer scope. Their first major task was the Valley Gate. In many other areas along the city's perimeter, the workers only needed to reinforce and repair existing structures. However, this specific location required far more than basic strengthening. The builders had to construct the gate completely from scratch [מלבי״ם].

Beyond finishing the gate along with its doors and bars, this group took on a significant additional burden. They extended their efforts to build a massive section of the wall itself, spanning a thousand cubits [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This exceptionally long stretch of newly built wall continued all the way to the Dung Gate. While the name of this destination appears with a minor spelling variation, commentators agree that it refers to the well-known Dung Gate [אבן עזרא, מנחת שי]. The massive construction effort of Hanun and his team ended right at this boundary. They built the wall entirely up to the edge of the location, but the restoration of the Dung Gate itself was not part of their project [רש״י].
