Nehemiah 3:8Sefaria

עַל־יָד֣וֹ הֶחֱזִ֗יק עֻזִּיאֵ֤ל בֶּֽן־חַרְהֲיָה֙ צֽוֹרְפִ֔ים {ס} וְעַל־יָד֣וֹ הֶחֱזִ֔יק חֲנַנְיָ֖ה בֶּן־הָרַקָּחִ֑ים וַיַּֽעַזְבוּ֙ יְר֣וּשָׁלַ֔͏ִם עַ֖ד הַחוֹמָ֥ה הָרְחָבָֽה׃ {ס}

The massive effort to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem brought together people from all walks of life, including specialized craftsmen who stepped up to fortify the city's weakest points. Among these builders was Uzziel son of Harhaiah, a member of the silver and gold smiths [מצודת ציון]. It is possible that both he and his father shared this profession, or perhaps their entire family was known by the title of their trade [רש"י, רלב"ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Working right alongside him was Hananiah, who came from a family of perfumers and spice makers [רס"ג, רלב"ג].

Together, these craftsmen engaged in a specific method of construction. The primary approach among commentators is that they created a thick covering or ceiling-like structure. By packing the area with dirt, they formed a dense, sealed layer that effectively thickened and reinforced the barrier [רש"י, רס"ג, מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. On the other hand, a different perspective suggests that their work was simply a general act of building, assisting, and strengthening the existing structure [רלב"ג, אבן עזרא].

This intense reinforcement continued up to a particularly wide section of the wall. The need for such massive fortification in this specific area stemmed from Jerusalem's geography. The northern side of the city was an exposed plain, completely lacking the natural protection of surrounding mountains. To compensate for this vulnerability, the builders had to significantly thicken the wall, turning it into a solid shield against potential enemy attacks. In this same geographic stretch stood the Gate of Ephraim. Because this gate had not been completely destroyed in the past, it did not require a separate restoration project and was simply absorbed into the broader construction of the wall [מלבי״ם].
