נחמיה, פרק ג׳, פסוק י׳

Nehemiah 3:10Sefaria

וְעַל־יָדָ֧ם הֶחֱזִ֛יק יְדָיָ֥ה בֶן־חֲרוּמַ֖ף וְנֶ֣גֶד בֵּית֑וֹ וְעַל־יָד֣וֹ הֶחֱזִ֔יק חַטּ֖וּשׁ בֶּן־חֲשַׁבְנְיָֽה׃ {ס}

The massive project of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem was carefully divided among numerous workers. Often, the assignment of these sections was not random; there was a clear personal and geographical connection between the builders and the specific parts of the wall they were tasked to restore.

One of these dedicated builders was Jedaiah son of Harumaph. The name Harumaph may have been a standard family name, or it might have served as a descriptive nickname for a person with a slightly sunken nose [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Jedaiah took responsibility for repairing the segment of the wall located directly across from his own home [אבן עזרא].

There are different ways to understand the scope of his contribution. It is possible that the general division of labor simply placed his assigned section right next to his residence [רש״י]. Alternatively, this location highlights a special, additional effort on his part. In this view, after completing his regular share of the work alongside the other builders, Jedaiah took on extra responsibility to independently rebuild the specific stretch of the wall facing his house [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].

The continuous chain of construction marched on down the line. Immediately adjacent to Jedaiah's section, the next segment of the wall was repaired and secured by Hattush son of Hashabneiah [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
