The massive project of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem moves forward as specific individuals take charge of different sections. Joiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah are tasked with repairing one of the city's key entrances.

The primary approach among commentators is that the title of this entrance, known as the old gate, was its official name [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Linguistically, this descriptive title implies a missing noun, indicating that it was specifically the gate of the old wall [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. It earned this designation because it was an ancient structure that had stood in Jerusalem since early times [רלב״ג]. Geographically, this entrance was situated on the northeastern side of the city. Historically, some identify it as the Corner Gate, the location where King Uzziah once built towers [מלבי״ם].

The builders did not just patch up the surrounding area; they completely restored the structure. After reinforcing the entrance, they constructed a proper ceiling and roof over it [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Once the roof was in place, they finished the job by installing the doors, locks, and bars, fully securing that section of the city.
