The massive project of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem progressed steadily, with careful records kept of exactly who worked on each section. Often, individuals took responsibility for repairing the parts of the wall that stood right next to their own living quarters.

One of these builders was Hanun, the son of Tzalaf. He is identified by a specific title, which the primary approach among commentators understands as a family ranking, indicating that he was the sixth son in a large family. However, another perspective suggests this title reflects his profession, identifying him as the official in charge of working with fine linen [ר' סעדיה גאון]. Hanun took on an extra share of the labor, repairing an additional section of the wall beyond his initial responsibility [רש"י, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מנחת שי, מלבי"ם].

Further along the construction line, Meshullam the son of Berechiah repaired the section directly facing his personal chamber. This private room was built on the inner side of the city, right up against the wall [רש"י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another view specifies the location of this chamber, placing it directly across from the courtyard of the Temple [מלבי"ם].
