Proverbs 10:28Sefaria

תּוֹחֶ֣לֶת צַדִּיקִ֣ים שִׂמְחָ֑ה וְתִקְוַ֖ת רְשָׁעִ֣ים תֹּאבֵֽד׃

The way people look toward the future reveals the true nature of their inner lives. For those who live with integrity, anticipating what is to come brings deep satisfaction and happiness. In contrast, the ambitions of those who pursue evil are ultimately doomed to end in ruin and disappointment.

The primary approach among commentators is that the expectations of the righteous will be fully realized, naturally resulting in profound joy. On the other hand, the hopes of the wicked will never materialize, leaving them empty, distressed, and sad [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This difference is rooted in the very nature of their waiting. The righteous wait for a reality that is absolutely certain and guaranteed by God. Because their reward is assured, the waiting period itself is filled with happiness rather than agonizing doubt. The wicked, however, pin their hopes on things that are inherently unstable and uncertain, such as the sudden accumulation of wealth. Because their foundation is shaky, their hopes are destined to collapse [מלבי״ם].

Beyond the certainty of their expectations, there is a fundamental difference in what each group actually desires. The righteous place their trust in spiritual growth, intellectual pursuits, and eternal life. Since these spiritual assets can never be destroyed, the mere act of looking forward to them serves as an ongoing source of delight [רלב״ג, עמנואל הרומי]. This positive anticipation grants them strength and joy in their service of God in the present world. Conversely, the wicked focus all their desires on material possessions and physical pleasures. Because everything in the physical world is temporary and fleeting, their hopes are guaranteed to fade, leaving them with nothing but anxiety and hard work. Ultimately, they lose even the basic hope of turning their lives around and repenting before old age sets in [אלשיך].

Taking a completely different perspective, the dynamic between these two groups can be viewed through the lens of the direct conflict between good and evil. From this angle, the anticipation of the righteous is specifically focused on witnessing the eventual downfall of corruption. This expectation will ultimately come true, bringing them joy. Meanwhile, the wicked constantly scheme and hope to bring about the destruction of the good, but their malicious desires will completely fail and vanish [אבן עזרא].
