Proverbs 24:25Sefaria

וְלַמּוֹכִיחִ֥ים יִנְעָ֑ם וַ֝עֲלֵיהֶ֗ם תָּב֥וֹא בִרְכַּת־טֽוֹב׃

Standing firm against injustice and correcting those who do wrong is more than a moral ideal; it is an active duty that brings inner satisfaction and the respect of society. A person who values honesty cannot remain indifferent when witnessing bad behavior. They carry a responsibility to speak up, correct the wrongdoer, and completely avoid flattering the wicked [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם].

The act of offering correction is deeply connected to a sense of pleasantness and beauty. Commentators offer two ways to understand this connection. One view focuses on the internal reward of the person speaking up, noting that simply choosing to walk the honest and upright path brings a profound sense of peace and pleasantness to their own soul [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective looks at the actual method used to correct the wrongdoer. According to this approach, the correction should be delivered with soft, pleasant words. Rather than throwing harsh accusations that naturally cause defensiveness and anger, the goal is to encourage the person. One might remind them that they are fundamentally good, come from a fine background, and have merely made a few mistakes. By suggesting that they return to the right path to prove any bad rumors wrong, this wise and gentle method draws the person in and makes them genuinely willing to listen [אלשיך, מצודת דוד].

As a result of this moral courage and positive action, a great blessing follows. This reality is the exact opposite of the anger society directs at those who flatter or excuse bad behavior. Because of their honesty and willingness to speak up, people will naturally bless those who offer correction [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם], and the specific blessings of good people will rest upon them [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, the greatest and most complete blessing is the very success of gently guiding someone back to the right path [אלשיך, מצודת דוד].
