תהלים, פרק קל״ו, פסוק ב׳

Psalms 136:2Sefaria

ה֭וֹדוּ לֵאלֹהֵ֣י הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים כִּ֖י לְעוֹלָ֣ם חַסְדּֽוֹ׃

Acknowledging the ultimate source of power in the universe requires looking past the immediate forces of nature. Ancient cultures often observed the immense power of the stars, the natural environment, and the spiritual forces guiding them, mistakenly believing these entities possessed independent authority. True recognition of the Creator involves understanding that all celestial and earthly systems are entirely dependent on a single, supreme authority.

The primary approach among commentators is that the lesser divine powers referenced in this context are the ministering angels [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, מאירי, מלבי״ם]. These angels are supreme spiritual beings completely devoid of physical bodies [אבן עזרא]. They function as the great leaders of the heavenly host, carrying out their duties strictly according to God's command [מאירי]. While they hold authority and rule over the lower realms of creation, God remains the ultimate ruler standing high above them [רד״ק].

The necessity of offering thanks to the Master of these spiritual beings stems from a historical error. Early nations tended to attribute independent power and mastery to the systems of nature, the stars, and the angels that guide them. Therefore, it is crucial to emphasize that God is the exclusive source of their strength. He alone empowers the angels and the forces of nature, and everything operates solely under His direct guidance [מלבי״ם].

On a deeper level, the reference to these divine forces hints at the Divine Presence. According to this perspective, the physical world is incapable of directly receiving the overwhelming abundance of God, who is the ultimate cause of all things. To resolve this, God channels His blessings through a gradual spiritual chain, passing it down to the Divine Presence and then finally to the physical world. This stepped system protects the material world, allowing it to exist and absorb divine goodness without being completely overwhelmed and destroyed. The very existence of this careful, protective process is the ultimate expression of His eternal kindness [אלשיך].
