תהלים, פרק קל״ו, פסוק ה׳

Psalms 136:5Sefaria

לְעֹשֵׂ֣ה הַ֭שָּׁמַיִם בִּתְבוּנָ֑ה כִּ֖י לְעוֹלָ֣ם חַסְדּֽוֹ׃

The call to thank God for His wonders naturally moves from a general praise to the specific act of creating the heavens [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This refers to the sky formed on the second day of creation, which holds all the planetary spheres and star systems [אבן עזרא, מאירי, רד״ק]. Yet, this creation is not merely a historical event that ended in the past. God is actively and constantly guiding nature, renewing the work of creation every single day [מלבי״ם].

The heavens were made with a specific divine trait: understanding. This trait is uniquely suited for the celestial realm because understanding represents the ability to separate truth from falsehood. In contrast, earthly wisdom deals with separating good from evil. Since the heavens are fixed and exist beyond the earthly struggles of good and bad, understanding is their defining quality [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective suggests that this understanding points to the heavens and the celestial spheres being created as living, intelligent entities [מאירי].

The careful design of the heavens is directly tied to God's eternal kindness. The very fact that the stars and skies are constantly renewed without interruption is a lasting act of grace [רד״ק]. Furthermore, the heavens and the angels do not actually need any kindness for themselves. Instead, God used divine understanding to shape them precisely for human needs, turning the skies into a channel that brings blessing down to the world.

Sometimes, the arrangement of the stars and the natural order seems to cause unfairness, where good people suffer and bad people succeed. However, God organized these celestial systems with profound understanding to ensure that every person receives exactly what they need based on their actions and His will. If a bad person receives good fortune, it may be to use up their merits, and if a good person faces hardship, it serves to maintain the world and correct the human soul. Therefore, even this complex and sometimes confusing system is an expression of supreme kindness, designed to ensure that no single person is ever completely pushed away or lost [אלשיך].
