Psalms 136:6Sefaria

לְרֹקַ֣ע הָ֭אָרֶץ עַל־הַמָּ֑יִם כִּ֖י לְעוֹלָ֣ם חַסְדּֽוֹ׃

After contemplating the heavens above, human attention naturally shifts to the earth beneath our feet [אבן עזרא]. The solid ground we walk on feels permanent and secure, yet its very existence is not a natural given. It is a continuous miracle that defies the laws of nature to make life possible.

In the natural order of the elements, water is meant to rise, surround the globe, and completely cover the solid earth [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, אלשיך]. However, God intervened in this natural design. He gathered the waters to one place, spreading out the land and laying it flat to cover the watery depths of the lower hemisphere [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. By exposing the dry land and elevating it above the depths, He ensured that the waters would not return to flood the earth, creating a safe space where life and growth can thrive [רד״ק, מאירי].

This unnatural reality, where heavy earth sits above water, carries a profound lesson. In truth, the waters of the sea remain positioned higher than the land. If God wished to destroy the world, He would not need to take any active steps; He would simply need to step back and let nature run its normal course. This fragile balance is meant to awaken humanity to correct its ways out of awe. It serves as a constant reminder that human survival depends entirely on God's active will, which holds the oceans back from washing over the continents [אלשיך].

On a deeper level of creation, the stability of the earth relies on a wondrous, hidden system. The land is supported by pillars resting on water, the water is held by mountains, the mountains are supported by wind and storm, and the entire structure ultimately hangs on the arm of God. While some view this foundation as resting on twelve or seven pillars, another perspective suggests there is only one single pillar supporting the earth, named "Righteous." This implies that moral and spiritual integrity is what actually sustains the physical world [תורה תמימה].

Realizing that the world exists in a suspended state, entirely contrary to its own nature, reveals the depth of God's constant kindness. Holding back the natural flow of water is an absolute act of grace that keeps the world alive at every moment. This kindness is guaranteed forever. Even though the waters once broke their boundaries and flooded the dry land, God swore that such destruction would never happen again, ensuring the permanent safety of the earth [רד״ק].
