תהלים, פרק מ״ט, פסוק ז׳

Psalms 49:7Sefaria

הַבֹּטְחִ֥ים עַל־חֵילָ֑ם וּבְרֹ֥ב עׇ֝שְׁרָ֗ם יִתְהַלָּֽלוּ׃

A false sense of security often stems from material possessions. A clear warning is directed toward those who suffer from spiritual blindness, having placed all their trust in their accumulated wealth [אלשיך]. This marks the beginning of a new, independent thought rather than a direct continuation of earlier fears [אבן עזרא]. It serves as a direct challenge to the rich, calling out those who rely entirely on their fortunes [מאירי, מלבי״ם, אלשיך].

The core problem with these individuals is not that they are wealthy. Rather, it is their failure to use their resources for acts of kindness and charity. They view the mere gathering of money and the ability to boast about it as their ultimate goals in life [מלבי״ם]. This extreme overconfidence leads them to dismiss their wrongdoings, trampling over their sins with pride. Because of this arrogance, they actually have a much greater reason to fear the consequences of their actions [מצודת דוד].

Standing in stark contrast to this attitude, the psalmist emphasizes that it is entirely inappropriate for him to adopt their ways [רד״ק]. Ultimately, trusting in riches is a pointless effort. A person's money will not help or save them in the end [רש״י]. Death constantly circles and pursues everyone, and it will inevitably reach those who have put all their faith in their property [מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
