הִנֵּ֥ה יְחַבֶּל־אָ֑וֶן וְהָרָ֥ה עָ֝מָ֗ל וְיָ֣לַד שָֽׁקֶר׃

Evil does not just happen; it is conceived, carried, and eventually brought into the world. The creation and execution of wickedness closely mirror the biological process of pregnancy and childbirth, moving from a hidden concept to a final outcome. This progression does not describe a sudden mistake or a careless wrong, but rather a carefully calculated and premeditated malicious plan [מצודת דוד].

The primary approach among commentators views this dark progression as mirroring the stages of conception, the pain of labor, and delivery [רש״י, אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד]. Alternatively, the process can be understood more directly as a path of corruption, destruction, and injustice [המאירי]. Within this framework, the different elements of wrongdoing come together. Some scholars view the various expressions of wickedness as simple synonyms for evil [רד״ק]. Others, however, identify them as distinct building blocks of a sin: the initial wrong is the unlawful use of power, followed by a heavy mental and psychological effort—which some also interpret as treachery—culminating in a final, deceitful result [מלבי״ם, המאירי].

The parallel between childbirth and the development of a sin is understood in two main ways. One perspective divides the process into three distinct phases: the pregnancy represents the hidden, wicked thought resting in the heart; the birth pangs represent speaking those thoughts aloud; and the actual birth is the physical execution of the deed [רד״ק, המאירי]. Another perspective sees this simply as the natural, chronological sequence of conception leading to pregnancy and ultimately birth [מלבי״ם].

Despite the meticulous planning and immense effort the wicked person invests, the final product is an illusion. The grand plan fails to materialize, beginning in emptiness and ending in nothingness, meaning all that hard work goes completely to waste [רש״י, אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, the malicious plot does not merely fail to reach its target; it actively backfires. Ultimately, the evildoer is harmed by his own scheme, suffering the exact same punishment he intended for his victim [שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד].

Historically, this entire cycle can be seen in the turbulent relationship between Saul and David. Saul’s initial wicked actions, such as sending spies and personally hunting David, prove a pattern. Because his actions began with injustice and harmful effort, any promise he makes to stop his pursuit is inherently false and cannot be trusted. A process rooted in wrongdoing will inevitably give birth to a lie [אלשיך].
