Psalms 7:16Sefaria

The principle of poetic justice and measure-for-measure retribution stands at the heart of this imagery. The wicked plot to harm others, yet the very effort they invest in preparing a trap is exactly what leads to their own downfall. Like a hunter preparing a deep, hidden pit to catch prey, the wicked become so consumed with crafting their snare that they stumble and fall into it themselves The ultimate outcome is the complete opposite of their original intention, and this ruin is entirely of their own making [שטיינזלץ].

The act of creating this trap is understood in several ways. Some view the continuous digging as a simple emphasis on the destructive act [רד״ק]. Others explain that it highlights the intensity of the malice, showing that the wicked do not just dig a trap, but actively work to make it deeper Taking a more metaphorical approach, the process of digging represents the evolution of evil itself. It begins with the initial formation of a malicious thought and concludes with the nurturing and final execution of the sinister plot [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, the pit serves as a place of profound lowliness and destruction

This concept of self-inflicted ruin echoes across both history and spirituality. Historically, it serves as a prophecy regarding King Saul, who sought to strike King David down with a sword but ultimately fell upon his own weapon [רד״ק, מאירי]. Another clear example is the story of Haman, whose wicked plans returned upon his own head when he was hanged on the very gallows he built for Mordecai [חומת אנך]. On a spiritual level, the pit serves as an allegory for Hell. Through their evil deeds and the resources they spend on wrongdoing, the wicked effectively dig, deepen, and widen their own punishment with their own two hands [חומת אנך].
